Insurance for Riders Print

The Big W Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride does not insure riders for injury or damage to bicycles.

Accordingly, it is strongly recommended that all individuals look to make their own arrangements for such insurance.

One convenient way of doing this is take out membership with one of the State Cycling Organisations (i.e. Bicycling Qld, Bicycle Victoria, Bicycle SA) that provide insurance within their membership.

These memberships usually include insurance that will cover you for everyday riding (i.e. your own training rides, training rides, riding to work), including organised rides but do not generally cover racing of any sort. There are separate race dedicated club memberships available if you wish to include riding in races.

Some of the considerations you might want to take into account when looking at memberships are:

  1. Personal accident insurance if you have an accident while cycling;
  2. Third party and third party property insurance;
  3. Comprehensive Public Liability Insurance;
  4. Free legal  assistance;
  5. Covers you for your State or Australia and in particular Queensland
  6. Family membership/Individual/Racing etc; and
  7. Travel insurance.

For insurance of your bicycle you can either, contact your Insurance Company and ask what type of insurance they provide reference bicycles or you can often go through a third party when applying for membership from whichever organisation you decide to join.

Ride History Print
The ride was founded in 1999 by Selwyn Hardwick. Sel felt helpless when his sister passed away from cancer, and one of his grandchildren became ill with leukemia. On a road trip coming back from Cairns, Sel came up with the idea of riding from Townsville to Cairns to raise money to give to the CCIA. He felt that this was a way he could help his grandson proactively. He invited his son to join in the challenge and the idea was born.

While approaching bike shops in Townsville, Sel realized that he hadn’t done a lot of riding for some time and knew that he would need some help. It was when Sel visited Andrew Abrahams at Better Bikes that the idea became reality, with Andrew suggesting that he get involved and they make it a ride for anyone to participate in. It was here that the BIG W Townsville to Cairns Bike ride as we know it today was formed.

We acknowledge and congratulate both Sel and Andrew, along with members of the original committee (Jan Hardwick, Joseph Greco, Catherine Stuart and John Heufel) in establishing one of CCIA’s major fundraising events.
